Student Leadership
At Woodlea Primary School, we believe that every child has the potential to be a leader. Through a wide range of leadership opportunities, our children develop confidence, responsibility and a strong sense of belonging within our school community. Student leadership is an integral part of our commitment to developing well-rounded children who live out our core values of kindness, teamwork, courage, curiosity, resilience and determination. These opportunities enable children to take responsibility, act as positive role models and make a meaningful contribution to school life. Our approach to student leadership also promotes the British Values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, and mutual respect and tolerance, preparing children to be thoughtful, responsible citizens in modern Britain.
School Council
Our School Council is made up of representatives from every class, ensuring that all children have a voice. Members of the School Council are elected by their class, giving children first-hand experience of democracy in action. They take pride in representing their class and ensuring that everyone’s ideas and opinions are heard.
School Council members:
- Gather and represent pupil voice from each class
- Share ideas and suggestions to improve school life
- Support fundraising and community initiatives
- Work alongside staff to bring about positive change
Through this role, children develop confidence, teamwork and communication skills, while demonstrating our values of kindness and respect by listening carefully to others.
Junior Road Safety Officers (Upper Key Stage 2)
Our Junior Road Safety Officers (JRSOs) are children from Upper Key Stage 2 who promote safety on the way to school. They take on important responsibilities, including:
- Raising awareness of road safety
- Delivering assemblies and key messages
- Organising events to promote safe and active travel
- Encouraging others to make responsible choices
This role supports children in understanding the importance of rules and responsibilities, linking to the British Value of the rule of law, while also developing courage and determination to speak to others and lead initiatives.
House Captains (Year 6)
Our Year 6 House Captains are excellent role models who consistently demonstrate our school values. Elected by their class, House Captains lead their houses with pride and enthusiasm. They:
- Motivate and support their house teams
- Help organise and lead events and competitions
- Promote positive behaviour and teamwork
- Represent the school at events and assemblies
House Captains demonstrate teamwork, resilience and determination, and embody the British Values of mutual respect and tolerance, ensuring everyone feels included and valued.
Librarians
Our pupil librarians play a vital role in promoting a love of reading across the school. They can nominate themselves for this role and take responsibility for:
- Organising and caring for the library
- Supporting younger children with book choices
- Promoting reading for pleasure
- Creating a calm and welcoming environment
This role encourages curiosity, responsibility and independence, helping children to develop a lifelong love of learning.
Developing Future Citizens
Through our student leadership opportunities, our children learn that their actions make a difference. They grow in confidence, develop important life skills and learn how to work collaboratively with others. By placing our values of kindness, teamwork, courage, curiosity, resilience and determination at the heart of leadership, we ensure that all children leave Woodlea Primary School as confident, respectful and responsible individuals, ready for the next stage of their education and beyond.
